Emergency Dentistry Edmonton AB

Orchards Dental is still open for emergency dental services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When you have a dental emergency in Edmonton, we understand that it is serious and that you need to see a dentist as soon as possible. At Orchards Dental, we will do our best to see you the day of your emergency, and we intentionally leave openings in our schedule so we can see you as soon as possible without making you wait days or weeks. Whatever the cause of the emergency, give us a call and we will do our best to see you right away! We understand that it may be an anxious time and we will do our best to address any concerns you have.

Below are a few common dental emergencies and what can be done in those situations.

Toothache

Toothaches are commonly caused by cavities, infections, cracks, fractures or trauma to teeth. Such problems cannot resolve on their own. It is best to see a dentist as soon as possible so the cause of the pain can be determined and appropriate treatment can be done before the problem worsens. In the meantime, painkillers may be taken to help reduce the pain.

Tooth Knocked Out (Avulsed Tooth)

If your tooth or teeth have been knocked out due to trauma or an accident, there is still a chance that the tooth can be saved. If the tooth was knocked out of your mouth in one piece, try to see a dentist as soon as possible (ideally within minutes), as the sooner treatment is done, the better chance there is that the tooth can be saved. Until you are able to see the dentist, place the tooth is an appropriate storage medium such as in a glass of milk or on the inside of your cheek (between the cheek and the teeth). If the trauma or accident has resulted in other more serious medical or health concerns, get those dealt with before the tooth problem.

Timing is important but there are other factors that come into play in having a knocked-out tooth grow back into its socket

  • The condition of the tooth’s root and if it’s healthy enough
  • Intact and uncontaminated pulp
  • Little to no damage of the tooth including and breaks or splits
  • Intact gum and underlying bone
  • Moist and sanitary storage before replantation

Broken Teeth or Broken Fillings

If your tooth or an old filling has broken, it is best to get it repaired as soon as possible. If it is not repaired, the remaining tooth structure of your tooth may be weaker and more likely to fracture further. Until you are able to get the tooth repaired, try to avoid using that side of your mouth for eating and try to stick to softer foods. In some cases if a large portion of your tooth has broken, it may need to be removed; otherwise, there is a likelihood of the tooth becoming infected and painful.

You may have one or more fillings to replace and need emergency dental service to prevent tooth decay. The pain in your tooth is noticeable when you lose a filling and you increase the risk of tooth decay if you don’t get it fixed by a dentist. An abscess, root canal, or loss of teeth can occur if a damaged filling is not treated in a proper timely manner. Some causes for emergency dental fillings are

  • Your filling loosens or falls out due to sudden dental trauma or biting down on a hard object
  • Untreated tooth decay under a worn filling is a major reason why someone would need emergency dental services. You may require an emergency dental filling to replace the old filling to prevent the further spread of tooth decay
  • New cavities in your teeth can form from untreated tooth decay. This can lead to severe pain which can cause the need for a root canal. In order to avoid the need for a root canal, you may need emergency dental services to remove the tooth decay and have a filling placed to restore the tooth.

Sore Gums

Sore gums can be caused by a variety of things and it can be serious if your gums are infected. It is best to see a dentist as soon as possible to ensure there is no infection, or to treat any present infection. Until you are able to get treatment, do your best to keep the site clean. Painkillers may be taken to reduce soreness but they will not solve the problem on their own.

It is very important to keep your gums healthy for a great smile. If you are dealing with bleeding gums it could be because of many different reasons. Some common causes are

  • Cavities
  • Medication
  • Gingivitis
  • New toothbrush (hard bristles) or floss routine

Gum or Facial Swelling

Swelling in or around the mouth is often a sign of infection and should be assessed as soon as possible to either ensure no infection is present or to treat the infection before it becomes more serious. Dental infections can be very serious and can be life-threatening if untreated, as infections can spread to other parts of the body. The sooner infection can be managed, the easier it is to treat. Likely antibiotics and treatment to the offending tooth will be necessary for cases of dental infection.

There are other types of dental emergencies besides those listed above. If you think you have a dental emergency in Edmonton, give us a call and make an appointment today!

Emergency Dental Care - Orchards Dental - Review by Jacob Thomas

=I have been going to Orchards Dental for a year now. The experience has been great so far. Especially this past weekend, I had to contact the emergency number. Dr. Dennis responded right away and help me with a temporary solution until he could see me when the office opened. This was my first time with Dr. Dennis, and I was quite pleased with my experience. He put me at ease and explained what needed to be done. I was also very impressed with the way he interacted with his staff.
All the best!
