In dentistry, there are many buzzwords used to talk about aesthetic or cosmetic dentistry. People commonly use terms such as smile makeover, smile enhancement, or Hollywood smile to talk about restoring their smile to make it look ideal. Sometimes, cosmetic dentistry is used to restore a person’s smile to make it look like how it used to look, to a more youthful smile, to make the smile look like it did when the person was younger. Other times, dentistry is used to create a smile that someone never had before, the smile that one always dreamed of having. In either case, the goal of cosmetic dentistry is to create a stunning smile, one that looks natural and realistic and helps one to smile with confidence.
Problems with the Smile
There are many problems that can cause a smile to look less than ideal. Some people have teeth that are too short or too long. For other people, problems with the gums such as uneven gums, asymmetrical gums, or unnaturally red and puffy gums can affect the smile. In other cases, the teeth simply are not symmetrical, and the human eye easily picks up on teeth that do not appear to be the right size compared to the other teeth in the smile. The smile needs symmetry to look ideal. For others, the teeth are the wrong shade and appear too yellow, or old restorations such as fillings or crowns do not match the rest of the teeth. Likewise, old restorations may look fake, such as a fake looking crown or veneer.
Smile Improvement Possibilities
There are many things that can be done to improve your smile and make nicer teeth. Crowns or veneers can be done to make longer teeth or shorter teeth. Uneven gums can be corrected with gum shortening procedures or gum grafting procedures. Dental hygiene can be done to correct unhealthy red gums. Restorations such as crowns and veneers, or sometimes dental bonding of white fillings can be done to change tooth sizes and shapes to establish smile symmetry. Old restorations that have become stained (eg. Stained fillings or stained crowns) or have a colour that does not match the rest of the teeth can be replaced with new restorations, and custom shading can be done to match the new restoration to the shade of your natural teeth. In short, many things can be done to improve the smile, often even without braces or orthodontics.
